Six Leadership Moves for High-Impact Professional Learning Systems

How can school and district leaders design professional learning systems that actually improve teaching and learning? In this interactive session, the UEPC - Utah Education Policy Center at the University of Utah will share a research-informed framework for building coherent and aligned professional learning systems that result in improved student outcomes. Participants will explore six high-leverage leadership moves that shift professional learning from fragmented activities to intentional systems with lasting impact.

Participants will:
• Learn key research-based strategies to align and strengthen professional learning systems
• Explore six leadership moves—what they are, why they matter, and how they show up in practice
• Engage in interactive activities and structured tools designed to deepen understanding and immediate application
• Use a self-assessment to reflect on current systems and identify opportunities for greater alignment and coherence
• Draft a concrete action plan to bring this learning back to their schools or districts

Why This Matters:
When time and resources are limited, making every minute of professional learning count is essential. Yet too often, professional learning lacks the coherence needed to change practice and improve outcomes. This session equips leaders with practical tools and a roadmap to strengthen the systems behind the learning—so that every professional learning investment translates into better instruction, deeper teacher engagement, and stronger results for students.

Some learn things about trigonometry that you never knew. We will take an in-depth and right triangle trig and the meaning behind each of the ratios sine, cosine, and tangent. We will then extend this knowledge in a practical way to build the graphical representation for each of the ratios. If you have ever worked with trigonometry, this class will be super informative and eye opening. The goal is for all attendees to have a solid understanding of the relationships between the angles and the side lengths of a triangle.

Get your head out of the gutter! Despite what you’ve heard, CYA stands for “Center Your Attention” and is an essential skill that allows us to connect with our unique purpose, cultivate joy in everyday life, and align our mind, body, and spirit for our fulfillment.

Attention is our most valuable resource, and without intentional practices of centering we won’t be able to enjoy the beauty of all that is: Here, now, the life in front of us and the people around us. In an era of constant distractions personally and professionally (like the other “CYA”…) this skill is the path to falling in love with the life we already have. There’s no need to quit the caring, essential work in education to enjoy our life! Each of us can, with practice, reframe our everyday experience.
