Bring Earth and space science to life with three powerful, free digital tools your students will love! This hands-on session introduces Stellarium, Universe Sandbox, and NOAA’s Science On a Sphere Explorer (SOSx)—interactive platforms that make complex science concepts more engaging and accessible.

Use Stellarium to take your students on a virtual journey through the night sky. They'll model lunar phases, eclipses, and seasons, explore planetary motion, and visualize the Sun-Earth-Moon system.

Then, experiment with Universe Sandbox, a physics-based space simulator where students can create their own solar systems, simulate orbital dynamics, and investigate gravitational interactions—an innovative way to deepen understanding of planetary motion and forces.

Finally, dive into SOS Explorer, a tool for visualizing real-world data on Earth’s systems. Students can explore weather patterns, long-term data, atmospheric circulation, and the natural greenhouse effect with interactive datasets from NOAA.

Each of these tools supports the Utah 6th Grade SEEd Standards, with strong alignment to Strand 6.1 (Structure and Motion within the Solar System) and Strand 6.3 (Earth’s Weather Patterns and Climate). The session emphasizes three-dimensional learning by incorporating scientific modeling, data analysis, and systems thinking.

What if we expanded our definition of essential literature? This session explores the literary evolution of Hip-Hop, from its cultural roots in the Bronx, NY, to its impact as a powerful form of expression. Using East High School’s 11th & 12th-grade ELA topics courses as a case study, we’ll examine how Hip-Hop texts align with Utah’s Common Core State Standards. Having participated in the 3-Dimensional Rural Science Teacher Grant this past year, we have crafted an intentional lesson that effectively integrates the Science and Engineering Practices, Cross Cutting Concepts, and Disciplinary Core Ideas. Attendees will share what they have observed using a student hat and a teacher hat to experience SEEd design to create their own highly effective 3D lesson. Our example lesson “The Pressure's On: How Air Mass Movement Shapes Our Weather” aims to help students investigate and analyze data to observe the interactions between air masses that cause changes in weather conditions (Utah 6.3.2, ESS2.C, Ess2.D, MS-ESS2-5).

This presentation is for mathematics teachers and anyone else who has dabbled in trigonometry but never really understood it. Come learn things about trigonometry that you never knew. We will take an in-depth look into right triangle trigonometry and the meaning behind each of the ratios sine, cosine, and tangent. We will then extend this knowledge in a practical way to build the graphical representation for each of the ratios. Clark Planetarium offers teacher resources aligned with sixth grade SEEd standards. In this session, participants will explore our Energy and Weather kits (Strands 6.3 and 6.4) and Density kits (Strands 6.1, 6.2, and 6.3). Hands-on investigations reveal how different materials retain and release heat, supporting an understanding of how the Sun drives weather patterns. Participants will collect experimental data, graph and compare the effects of heat energy, and link their findings to local, regional, and global phenomena. We’ll also demonstrate how a two-compartment tank can model the role of heat energy in driving ocean and atmospheric currents. These resources emphasize three-dimensional learning, support data analysis practices, and help bring complex Earth systems to life in the classroom.

This presentation is for mathematics teachers and anyone else who has dabbled in trigonometry but never really understood it. Students often find it hard to connect right triangle trigonometry to the curves of the sine and cosine function. In this session we will be building large unit circles and cleverly linking it to models of the sine and cosine curves using spaghetti. This allows students to easily transition from triangles to function curves. Even if you are not a mathematics teacher

Nearing the completion of year two of a five-year initiative, the STEM Action Center (STEM AC), in partnership with the UEPC - Utah Education Policy Center, developed STEM Education Innovators (SEI) program—a statewide professional learning cohort designed to support secondary STEM educators (grades 6–12) in growing their capacity across four key areas: teacher leadership, STEM integration, content knowledge, and addressing a local STEM-focused problem of practice.

This interactive one-hour session will showcase the SEI learning design, which blends long-term, job-embedded professional learning with personalized support. Attendees will hear directly from current SEI teacher leaders, explore the cohort’s learning experiences, and examine the systems-level design that sustains educator growth over time.

The session will also provide a preview of the elementary SEI cohort, launching in Fall 2027, and highlight ways school and district leaders can support educators in leveraging the SEI experience to foster STEM instructional improvement, leadership development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Designed for school and district leaders, instructional coaches, and K12educators, this session offers insights into how the SEI model can support their capacity for high-impact STEM teaching and learning. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the SEI framework and how ongoing professional learning supports strengthen and build STEM knowledge and capacity among K12 teacher leaders.

Student and Child-Centered: Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Model Lives in Rural Schools

It is unusual to note the theory in practice as readily as it can be seen when overlaying Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological model in rural spaces. “The bioecological theory of human development, initially termed an ecological model approach, was originally proposed by Bronfenbrenner to explain how human development occurs, focusing largely on the impact of context” (Rosa & Tudge, 2013, p243). His theory places the child at the center and recognizes the many influences on the child and the influence of the child on his world. This nesting of the child provides opportunities for growth and development within a strengths-based framework which employs place-based pedagogy. Likewise, this framework welcomes community engagement and commitment to the growth, well-being, and care of all within a mutual network.

Incorporating ethnic studies materials into your lessons offers valuable opportunities to share the experiences, cultures, and contributions of diverse ethnic groups in Utah. This includes Indigenous peoples, members of the LDS community, African Americans, Latinos, Pacific Islanders, and Asian Americans, both within Utah and beyond. Utilizing the Utah Historical Society’s I Love Utah History website and other educator resources, attendees will learn how to integrate trusted, curated content to explore the rich histories and contemporary communities of Utah's many cultures.

We will also delve into the UEN Ethnic Studies Resource Hubs to discover innovative ways to teach about various cultures, their history, and their contributions to building the United States of America.

This session will equip educators with the resources and background knowledge needed to create a classroom environment that connects the past with the present, honors and reflects the varied experiences of Utahns of diverse ethnicities, and celebrates Utah's vibrant cultural tapestry.

In our hands-on session, we will practice how to implement kinesthetic activities aligned with fourth-grade SEEd standards, specifically Strand 4.4. We will develop models for day/night cycles, changing constellations throughout the year, and for why our Sun is the brightest star. By using our bodies to model the Earth, participants will demonstrate how rotation and revolution cause the cycles of day and night and changing constellations throughout the year. Participants will also become individual stars by holding an LED light as they investigate how distance relates to perceived brightness and will work together to form the constellation of Orion. This session will emphasize the use of models and how they provide evidence for constructing explanations of astronomical phenomena. CATALYST - Coaching and Alignment Toward Adaptive Leadership Yielding Systemic Transformation

This interactive session offers a hands-on introduction to CATALYST, a statewide professional learning experience designed by the UEPC - Utah Education Policy Center in partnership with the Utah State Board of Education (USBE) to support leaders in building coherent, aligned systems that lead to stronger outcomes for students.

In this two-hour session, participants will engage in key elements of the CATALYST professional learning series: exploring leadership principles that drive collective action, using tools for enhancing system alignment, and experiencing strategies to strengthen leadership coaching and mentoring—particularly the relationship between principals and their supervisors. Participants will get a taste of the CATALYST professional learning design, collaborative learning, and practical resources that make it a powerful space for transformation.

Participants will leave with:
* Practical tools and materials used in the CATALYST program
* A deeper understanding of leadership mindsets and moves that foster coherence
* Insights into how CATALYST strengthens principal–supervisor partnerships and builds trust and shared leadership
* A preview of how the statewide CATALYST cohort fosters connection, support, and momentum among school and district leaders

Grounded in research and real-world application, the CLEAR approach centers feedback that is Collaborative, Learning-Oriented, Embedded, Actionable, and Reflective.

Participants will analyze feedback scenarios, reflect on past feedback experiences, and practice applying the CLEAR framework to strengthen their ability to give and receive feedback that builds trust, supports instructional shifts, and promotes continuous learning.

Beyond Aspire Plus: Navigating the Transition in High School Assessment
The landscape of secondary assessment in Utah is entering a phase of significant change. Following the passage of SB 39 (2025), the state is transitioning from the fixed-form Utah Aspire Plus (UA+) to a course-based, computer-adaptive High School RISE model for English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science. For rural LEAs—where teachers often operate as "departments of one"—this shift introduces unique technical hurdles alongside powerful new data opportunities.This session provides a comprehensive roadmap for these upcoming changes, specifically addressing how the move from predictive, grade-based scores to adaptive, course-based reporting directly affects instructional planning. Unlike the previous model, the High School RISE model ensures that data is a precise reflection of the specific course being taught, offering rural educators a clearer picture of student mastery within their specific disciplines.We will dive deep into three primary challenges unique to the rural experience:Overcoming Professional Isolation: We provide "pre-packaged" formative tools and USBE resources, such as the Performance Task Writing Template, to reduce the burden of designing assessments from scratch.Managing Instructional Breadth: We demonstrate how course-based data empowers teachers who lead multiple subjects to refine instruction with subject-specific accuracy.Mitigating Data Volatility: We explain how the Computer Adaptive (CAT) model provides more statistically reliable measures in small cohorts, ensuring that individual outliers do not skew school-wide results.Attendees will leave equipped with a clear understanding of USETS and UTIPs, ready to leverage these state resources to support local needs and foster resilient, data-informed rural classrooms.

Join us for an engaging session on the Gold Medal Schools Program, a comprehensive initiative designed to promote healthy lifestyles, regular physical activity, and nutritious eating habits among students. Originally created to coincide with the 2002 Utah Olympics, this locally developed program is being re-established to align with the upcoming 2034 Olympic games, playing a key role in the state's broader Rural Health Transformation Plan.In this session, we will explore the core components of the proposed five-year Gold Medal Schools Pilot Program, which empowers eligible elementary schools to implement evidence-based strategies and create school policies that support lifelong health and wellnessLearning Intentions: Inform participants about the new Gold Medal Schools Program for rural schools, including grant opportunities.Demonstrate the framework (to be developed) and model activities that educators can implement as part of the program. Activities may include: nutrition education, fitness assessments, adaptive and inclusive sports, bike education, and active transport. Success Criteria: Participants have access to the framework and understand the  requirements of Gold Medal Schools. They will also know how to apply for funding for the 2026-27 school year. Participants can lead and administer the activities modeled during the session with students.

Students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities are at increased risk for academic frustration, anxiety, and diminished self-esteem, which can significantly impact their connection to school. For many, repeated experiences of difficulty with reading contribute not only to skill gaps, but also to reduced engagement, increased school avoidance, and a heightened likelihood of negative school outcomes.This session will explore the relationship between literacy challenges and mental health, with a specific focus on how reading difficulties influence student engagement and overall school experience. Participants will learn how to identify these patterns and implement practical, evidence-based supports that address both academic and social-emotional needs.Grounded in research and real-world application, this session will highlight structured literacy approaches, progress monitoring, and systems of support that help students build reading proficiency while also restoring confidence and connection to school. Special attention will be given to actionable strategies Utah educators and administrators can use within MTSS frameworks to better support students with learning disabilities.Participants will leave with a renewed understanding of what matters most—ensuring that every student is not only learning to read, but also feeling successful, connected, and motivated to engage in school.

With increased attention on dyslexia through legislation such as HB 393, many schools will soon be strengthening screening and identification practices—but identification alone does not improve outcomes. This hands-on session focuses on what must come next: building a guaranteed, schoolwide literacy system that ensures every student, including those with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, receives effective, consistent instruction.Participants will explore how to align core instruction, intervention, and progress monitoring within an MTSS framework to create a cohesive system of support. The session will emphasize evidence-based literacy practices, including structured literacy, explicit instruction, and data-driven decision making, while also addressing how these practices strengthen Tier 1 instruction for all students.In addition, the session will connect literacy systems to broader school priorities, including grading practices, student support structures, and fostering a culture of collective responsibility for reading outcomes. With lessons that support SEEd standard 3.2.1, Grow Lab evolved from an award-winning classroom program Red Butte offered for over two decades. In addition to engaging with the curriculum, this workshop provides you with your own grow frame and supplies to grow plants in your classroom at no cost to you. The seeds you receive are Wisconsin Fast Plants® (Brassica rapa); these plants complete their life cycle, from planting seeds to harvesting the seeds, in 40 days. This allows you and your 3rd graders to develop and refine models of changes that happen throughout the life cycle of Fast Plants® in real time.

Bridging the Gap to Grade-Level Text in the secondary classroom marks a critical shift from "learning to read" to "reading to learn" through evidence-based, equitable instruction. In a secondary setting, the Science of Reading transcends basic phonics to focus on disciplinary literacy, ensuring every student—regardless of their current reading level—has access to the complex, grade-level text they deserve. This approach moves beyond mere theory to provide a "boots on the ground" toolkit designed to maintain rigor across all content areas, including Science, Social Studies, Math, and ELA. By scaffolding up rather than differentiating down, educators ensure they are not simplifying the curriculum, but rather amplifying the support needed to meet high academic standards.Equity through access is the heartbeat of this instructional model, rooted in the belief that every student deserves to grapple with high-quality, grade-level text. A teacher’s expertise is the most powerful variable in the classroom; essentially, how well one teaches equals how well students learn. Inspired by research-based frameworks like Lexia Aspire®, Keys to Adolescent Literacy, LETRS, and The Writing Revolution, this method fosters an equitable environment where the teacher's skill drives literacy growth. The ultimate objective is immediate implementation through quick, explicit routines that take less than five minutes of class time yet yield massive results in comprehension.The first two pillars of the Secondary Literacy Toolkit focus on word-level mastery and the transition to meaning. The Multisyllabic "Attack" provides students with a "Longer Word Strategy" through word study and morphology. This involves explicit routines like "scooping" to chunk words by vowel sounds and investigating morphology—the prefixes, suffixes, and Latin/Greek roots that act as the "Lego bricks" of language. Building on this, Fluency acts as the bridge between word recognition and comprehension. Because learning is not a spectator sport, routines such as Choral, Cloze, Echo, and Dyad reading ensure that if one student is reading, everyone is reading, leveraging peer support to master the prosody of complex text.The third pillar emphasizes Explicit Vocabulary and Knowledge Building, moving far beyond "looking up definitions" toward deep ownership of Tier 2 and Tier 3 words. Educators learn to identify "load-bearing" words essential to a text's meaning. This process highlights the reciprocity of literacy—the idea that reading and writing are two sides of the same coin. By utilizing "The Writing Revolution" techniques, such as "Because, But, So" or Sentence Expansion, students immediately apply new vocabulary through writing to cement their understanding. This ensures that the cognitive load remains on the student, fostering active participation rather than passive observation.Finally, Scaffolding Complex Text ensures that rigor is maintained without compromising accessibility. Rather than simplifying the prose, teachers amplify the support through explicit vocabulary routines that move from basic definitions to deep conceptual understanding. By breaking down complex syntax and using sentence expansion, students can digest dense academic prose that might otherwise be out of reach.
