Utilizing the New Focused Graduation Pathway to Keep Students Engaged
Wednesday July 9, 2025 2:50pm - 3:50pm MDT
Too often students who are severely credit deficient become hopeless and drop out of school. The new Focused Graduation Pathway (FGP) provides these students with the opportunity to stay in school and acquire the necessary high school level knowledge and skills needed to pass the GED® test. The FGP will provide a student with a High School Credential and allow them to graduate in the same year as their peers. This session will provide a brief overview of the GED® test and the FGP, including how to bring the pathway into your school or district.

Building Foundations: Strategies for Successful Early Learning Instruction
Thursday July 10, 2025 11:10am - 12:10pm MDT
This presentation, "Building Foundations: Strategies for Successful Early Learning Instruction," addresses the critical issue of opportunity gaps in early learning and offers strategies to improve educational outcomes for all students. It emphasizes the importance of shifting from a deficit mindset to one that recognizes and addresses the root causes of these gaps.

The presentation highlights the role of high-quality practices and individualized instruction in creating supportive and inclusive learning environments. It also underscores the significance of understanding cultural context, aligning curriculum with the Utah Core State Standards for Early Learning, and using data-driven instruction to personalize learning and support teacher effectiveness.

By providing educators with actionable strategies and promoting a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to opportunity gaps, this presentation equips them to create successful learning experiences for all children, ultimately closing the opportunity gap and fostering a brighter future for Utah's youngest learners.

Exploring Cultural Responsiveness: Practicum Experiences in Rural Educational Settings
Thursday July 10, 2025 11:10am - 12:10pm MDT
Southern Utah University is committed to equipping teacher candidates with diverse classroom experiences rooted in a culturally responsive framework. As part of this mission, we have established a unique partnership with Monument Valley High School, where students immerse themselves for a week in a rural school setting within a Navajo community. This session will explain the rationale behind this valuable opportunity and how it prepares future educators to teach in diverse environments across Utah.
Throughout this presentation, we will share the insights and lessons learned from our teacher candidates' time in the school and community of Monument Valley. Presenters will highlight culturally responsive and inclusive teaching practices observed, offering insights into their relationship with the contextual factors of this rural setting. We will discuss how these practices influence student engagement and success, emphasizing the importance of fostering inclusive learning environments. Specific examples from the practicums will be provided to illustrate how these practices contribute to creating positive learning experiences for all students.
The goal of this presentation is to explore the impact of experiential learning in diverse settings, allowing teacher candidates to hone their skills in real-world contexts. By engaging directly with administrators, in-service teachers, and the local community, students gain invaluable hands-on learning opportunities that enrich their professional development. This immersive experience not only enhances teaching practices but also broadens students' perspectives, helping them build the tools needed to teach effectively in any classroom.

ELL as a Foreign Language
Friday July 11, 2025 11:00am - 12:00pm MDT
In many schools, the ELL class is treated as a throwaway class, with students put on a “program” and expected to learn English. Your ELL students deserve to be given a class centered on learning the English Language. Come see how a Teaching Second and Foreign Languages trained teacher arranges her classroom to put English Language Instruction front and center. All available resources will be shared with you for immediate implementation in your classrooms.
