About me
Matthew Smith M.Ed. is an Associate Director of Training and Technical Support at the Utah School Mental Health Collaborative (USMHC) within the University of Utah's Department of Educational Psychology, is dedicated to enhancing well-being in educational settings. He excels at evaluating needs, developing tailored school and district plans, and providing crucial support through mental health team building, stress management, and burnout reduction strategies. Matthew is involved in the onboarding of new schools, designs and updates training programs, and delivers annual refreshers, employing diverse instructional methods. His collaborative nature is evident in his work with USMHC and U-TTEC Lab staff on training needs assessment and content management.
Prior to the USMHC, Matthew served as Principal at SLCSE-Bryant Middle School, where he implemented the RULER Framework for SEL and developed a 3-tier mental health support system in partnership with the U-TTEC Lab. As an instructional leader, he oversaw teacher coaching, curriculum engagement, and compliance, utilizing a data-driven approach to improve student academic and wellness outcomes. His experience also includes serving as Assistant Principal, leading school mental health initiatives and professional development. Matthew's diverse background includes roles as an Assistant Principal Intern, Physics Teacher, and Elementary Science Professional Development Facilitator at the Salt Lake Center for Science Education. His extensive experience and deep commitment to the well-being of students and educators make him a significant asset to the educational community.
